Yes! At MedSchoolCoach, our mission is to help the next generation of physicians launch their careers. In-person shadowing is still the gold standard because it lets you observe in-person physician–patient interactions in a real-life clinical setting. However, most medical schools recognize virtual shadowing as a useful supplement that can add to but not replace in-person clinical experiences.
Our Clinical Simulations feature real case-based instruction from real physicians. These sessions are designed to teach you the basics of assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients.
We recommend that you use this series as an accessible way to build clinical skills and diagnostic reasoning. Pair these hours with in-person shadowing for a more well-rounded medical school application.
Application policies vary by program, so always check requirements for your target schools.
Whether you're a college pre-med, a high schooler, or a non-traditional career-changer, it's never too early (or too late) to start shadowing as a pre-med. No matter where you are on your journey to becoming a doctor, these clinical simulations offer insights into how physicians care for patients and think about clinical and diagnostic science.
How Virtual Shadowing Works
Step 1: Make Your Free Account
Take a moment to register for our Virtual Shadowing course. Creating an account is completely free and helps you keep track of your progress.
Step 2. Complete a Shadowing Session
Browse our clinical simulations, pick a case that catches your eye, then follow the doctor as they perform a full workup. Learn how physicians assess, diagnose, and treat patients in a risk-free environment.
Step 3. Take a Clinical Skills Quiz
After each case, complete a brief quiz that checks your understanding of the key diagnoses, treatments, and clinical reasoning moments you just observed. Pass the assessment to unlock your certificate.
Step 4. Claim Your Certificate for Shadowing Hours
After the assessment, download a personalized certificate for 1 hour of physician shadowing, digitally signed by Dr. Sahil Mehta, founder of MedSchoolCoach. Add it to your med school application using the following contact information:
